Unboxing

The Realme 6 pretty much shares the same packaging as the 6 Pro but without the “Pro” moniker. Inside its distinct yellow box is the smartphone itself, a silicone case, a 30W VOOC charger, a USB Type-C cable, a SIM eject pin, and documentation. A standard assortment of accessories from the brand.

A Fast Screen and Chipset for Gaming

Although positioned lower in the market than the Pro model of the 6 series, the Realme 6 still comes with a 90Hz IPS display albeit a smidge smaller at 6.5-inches. Resolution has been upped quite a bit to 2400 x 1080 from the Realme 5’s comparatively measly 1600 x 720, which puts it closer to the 6 Pro.

The largest jump of the Realme 6 from previous Realme smartphones is the 50% increase of refresh rate. Most smartphones only have a 60Hz display, increasing the refresh rate to 90Hz allows for smoother UI animations and more responsive gameplay. And since the Realme 6 will be more affordable than the 6 Pro, it will allow more people to experience a 90Hz screen.

A fast display will not matter if the system can’t pump out the frames needed to take advantage of its refresh rate. This is why Realme has decided to implement a Helio G90T chipset inside the 6. The platform comes with six Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.0GHz and two Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz.

The real upgrade of the G90T over the vanilla G90 is its GPU. The Helio G90T has the same Mali-G76 GPU as its predecessor, however, the clock speeds has been increased to 800MHz instead of the previous 720MHz.  In addition, the Realme 6 can have up to 8GB of RAM to add more performance and multitasking capabilities.

Muted Design Compared to the Pro

Realme has toned down the appearance of the 6 compared to the dazzling design of the 6 Pro, presumably to distinguish both smartphones from one another. Instead of a lightning bold, the Realme 6’s design has been patterned from a comet falling down from the sky.

The Realme 6 will be available in Blue and White variants with the aforementioned comet-inspired design. What we have on hand is the Comet White variant, which has a singular point at the bottom where all the light converges. The light rays slowly diffuses into many directions moving further to the top.

The Realme 6 still has a 64MP main camera

It might be cheaper than the 6 Pro, but the Realme 6 still has a 64MP f/1.8 main camera at the back. Its other cameras, however, have been comparatively downgraded to the usual array of backup lenses such as an 8MP f/2.3 ultrawide, a 2MP f/2.4 macro, and a 2MP f/2.4 monochrome and depth sensor.

We’ve taken a few sample shots with the smartphone’s main rear camera. Initial impressions of the main camera that it takes well-detailed photos while allowing the color to pop.

For those who like taking selfies, a 16MP f/2.0 selfie camera is available at the front. Realme is implementing a punch-hole solution here and thus there’s no ungodly notch smack in the middle of the display. Instead, there’s a tiny hole at the top left of the display that houses its front-facing camera.

Other Features

Thankfully, the device still comes with a USB Type-C connection at the bottom as well as 30W VOOC charging to make the wait for its 4,300mAh to become full significantly shorter compared to its predecessor’s 5V/2A charging.

Realme has also integrated the fingerprint scanner into the power button thus removing any chance of having an in-display scanner like other Realme smartphones in the past.

Like the 6i and the 6 Pro, the 6 comes with Android 10 with Realme UI. This enables the smartphone access to features such as Chroma Boost, Smart Assistant, and Smart Sidebar.

First Impressions

Like its sibling, the Realme 6 comes filled to the brim with features for a budget-oriented smartphone. It’s pretty much a direct upgrade in every aspect from its predecessor with its addition of a faster display, more powerful chip, quicker charging, and USB Type-C.

The only determining factor up in the air for the Realme 6 to become a budget monster or a flop is its price. When it was first launched in India, its highest 8GB/128GB variant was price at INR 18,999 (PhP 12,600 direct conversion), which was pretty good for the performance it can deliver. Hopefully, the Realme 6 will priced at around the same point to become palatable to more customers.

The Realme 6 and 6 Pro are expected to make their debut in the Philippines on May 27, 2020 via a live stream on the brand’s official Facebook page. Until then, we’ll be testing the Realme 6 and see what other tricks it has under its sleeve.

Introduced late last month, the ASUS VivoBook S14 M433 is now ready to hit the Philippine market. The S14 M433 is the latest addition to the ASUS VivoBook range and comes powered by AMD’s Zen 2 Ryzen processors for mobile devices.

The ASUS VivoBook S14 M433 sports a 14.0-inch IPS 1920 x 1080 display. As with most of their notebooks nowadays, the bezels have been shaved to the brand’s NanoEdge standards. This means that the actual display now takes up more of the real estate while the bezels are kept to a minimum.

Although the VivoBook range is positioned below the ZenBook series, it seems that ASUS hasn’t skimped on the build quality of the S14 M433. It has an aluminum chassis that’s available in four colors: Jungle Green, Sunglow Red, Dreamy White, and Bespoke Black.

Under its aluminum hood is either an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U or a Ryzen 5 4500U. Both models come with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of PCIe SSD storage. ASUS has included WiFi 802.11ax capabilities in the notebook for faster transfer speeds and lower latency over wireless connections.

ASUS will also be including their MyASUS software in the VivoBook S14 M433. With the app, you can now easily integrate your workflow between laptops and mobile devices. Sharing files can also be done to and from different devices. If you need more screen space, the MyASUS app can also mirror and extend the display to a connected mobile device for your convenience.

Unboxing

The Realme 6 Pro is shipped in a simple yellow box with the 6 Pro badge at the front. Accessories that come with the smartphone remain similar of past devices only the essentials. In this case, the contents include a 30W VOOC charger, a USB Type-C cable, documentation, and a silicone case.

A Chipset and Screen Focused on Gaming

The Realme 6 Pro comes with a rather large 6.6-inch display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080. With a FullHD+ resolution, we are able to use the smartphone a bit close to our face without seeing the individual pixels. In addition, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is on top to protect the display against any unintended scratches.

The biggest improvement over previous Realme smartphone’s in the 6 Pro is its 90Hz refresh rate. Though it may not have any useful applications in general use aside from smoother animations, higher refresh rates can give you an edge in games. This is especially apparent when you’re playing fast-paced games where animations are more fluid. While not as high other more expensive smartphones in the market, the faster refresh rate is still a welcome addition for a mid-range smartphone.

While a faster screen is all well and good, it’s practically useless if the smartphone’s chip can’t pump out the frames to take advantage of the display. Which is why Realme is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G platform on the 6 Pro.

Built on an 8nm process, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G focuses on gaming and better battery life. The platform comes with an 8-core Kryo 465 CPU that can achieve up to 2.3GHz and an Adreno 618 GPU. In addition, the chip also comes with support for dual-band WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.1

A Bold, Eye-Catching Aesthetic

Realme has chosen quite a striking design for the 6 Pro. Instead of the comparatively muted design of its contemporaries, the Realme 6 Pro has an unmistakable lightning bolt that runs through the length of the smartphone. Depending on the angle you look at the rear of the smartphone, the lightning bolt can be seen as singular or multiple entities.

The Realme 6 Pro is available in three colors: Lightning Blue, Lightning Orange, and Lightning Red. That unit that we have on hand is the Lightning Red variant, and like its lightning bolt, is quite astounding under the right lighting conditions. It’s red hue, however, seems to be a fusion of a deep maroon and violet in our eyes. Still, whatever color it may be, it’s still a remarkable sight to be seen.

Realme has also made a few changes in the other design aspects of the 6 Pro. Instead of a rear-mounted fingerprint or an in-display fingerprint scanner, the brand has fused the scanner into the power button.

What about its Cameras?

As for cameras, the Realme 6 Pro surpasses last year’s Realme XT in terms of specifications. Its quad camera department is headed by a 64MP f/1.8 f/1.8 main camera and is backed by three more lenses: a 12MP f/2.5 telephoto, an 8MP f/2.3 ultrawide, and a 2MP f/2.4 macro lens.

The brand has finally ditched the notch in the 6 Pro. In its stead, they are now using the more modern pill-style hole for its 16MP f/2.1 and 8MP f/2.2 front-facing cameras.

We’ve taken a few sample photos using the 64MP f/1.8 headliner. Photo quality is pretty much what we expect from Realme. Photos are detailed and colors are well reproduced. We are, however, holding off judgment until our review of the smartphone comes out in a couple of days.

What else does the Realme 6 Pro have?

The Realme 6 Pro has quite a few other improvements over its predecessors. A larger 4,300mAh battery has been fitted and has been paired with 30W VOOC Charging via its USB Type-C cable. To put that into perspective, the Realme XT from last year came with only a 4,000mAh battery with 20W VOOC Charging.

In addition to the larger battery, the device also comes with Realme UI. Having its roots from OPPO’s ColorOS, this means that the 6 Pro has additional features such as Chroma Boost and more UI customization.

First Impressions

Packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, an outstanding design, and a large FullHD+ 90Hz screen, the Realme 6 Pro has the chops to become a powerhouse smartphone. We’ve been thoroughly impressed so far by the Realme 6 Pro, the only thing that’s remaining to unveil is its price in the Philippines.

The Realme 6 Pro is slated to make its official arrival in the Philippine market on May 27, 2020. Before the launch, however, we’ll be testing the smartphone to see what kind of value it can bring to its customers like its predecessors did well in the past.
