Starting on November 19, Ghostface will be available in Mortal Kombat 1. As long as other world-specific friend characters have been a feature in our games, Woodsboro’s unique serial killer has always been a dream addition. Horror criminals have always been wonderful fit for the severe, surreal, over-the-top world of Mortal Kombat, and it was just a matter of moment for Scream’s private assailant, Ghostface. That day is here, and in the process of designing Ghostface for Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, we had to reply a bunch of questions. What role does a fighting sport play against this horror-movie criminal? And how will Ghostface appearance, tone, and perform like?
The overall appearance is comfortable of course: traditional mask, coat, and knife. Although, this presented unexpected problems in a fast-paced game. Most outfits have physics-based material portions, but no other mask is completely material. Additionally, the robe has huge, sagging strips of shadowy cloth fringe that are trailing off, despite being soft from head to toe. Without taking proper care, these things can quickly perform unexpected acts and become twisted up against themselves in a battle of kickboxing. Our skilled technicians and animators exchanged ideas to make Ghostface’s classic duds look their best, so to speak.
Our kombatants have complex cosmetic animations that enhance the action, despite Mortal Kombat’s reputation for masking ninjas. Even among our veiled figures, there are usually body or equipment options to show the full-face during play, if you desire. But not so here, since the firm, emotionless face is the group’s name information. In the presence of facial expressions, we took care to get more figure movements during the motion capture performance and in-game animating but that, just like in the films, a lot you come across with the slightest head bend or gesture—malice or humour, frustration or elation, rage or reservation.
And the movement is equally important as the sound. The most memorable recurring theme in the franchise is probably Rodger L. Jackson’s voice from the movies, which he reprises in his recurring role as Ghostface’s voice. Numerous different psychos have hid their own voices using Roger’s modulated one, and our killers are no exception, thanks to the easily accessible voice mod devices in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California.
And we do know who’s under there. There are many surprising and recognizable portrayals to choose from because Scream franchise fans are aware that Ghostface is an identity assumed by various unhinged characters in each film. The killer underneath the mask occasionally appears during climactic moments, despite the character’s face being covered up by the mask during fights. This usually occurs in dramatic fashion in movies when the killers ‘ identities are finally revealed. For Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, it’s during high-resolution cinematic Fatal Blows and finishing moves. And Billy Loomis, one of the Ghostface killers from the first Scream movie, is our” canon” Ghostface for these situations.
And he’s not the only blast from the past lurking under that mask, behind that voice, in the shadows. In the films, there usually is n’t just one Ghostface, and that’s true here too. There are a few surprises for long-time fans of Mortal Kombat with a keen eye to discover, including who’s joined in to assist an OG, Woodsboro Ghostface. Afterall, this is n’t the first time a Ghostface sought a little hired serial killer help!
Ghostface’s moveset in Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is also one to die for. Of course, the character is brimming with bloody finishers in the form of all-new Fatalities, an Animality, and Brutalities that winners can dole out after victories. It was a real treat to revisit classic movies for scenes to pay homage to, decide what kinds of attacks would have, and how they would lead to various attacks. Although I would n’t dare spoil them here, we did manage to include a few entertaining twists that you might not have expected, even though Scream fans may have their guesses of the most unexpected and ( pardon me ) gutting takedowns of beloved characters they’d expect to see referenced.
We sincerely hope you enjoy Ghostface’s inclusion on the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Expansion roster on November 19 as part of the PlayStation 5’s early access period, followed by widespread purchase availability on November 26.
