LEGO Horizon Adventures, launching on PS5 and PC November 14, brings about a fresh take on Aloy’s narrative from her first trip. At their Billund offices, Guerrilla and Studio Gobo exchanged a few insider secrets about the creation of the game. Watch the entire picture below, and read on to learn how, one cement at a time, they constructed Aloy’s world!
Kat Woolley, top maker at Studio Gobo, discusses how the story was adapted to fit this frolicsome experience and what it’s like to operate on a LEGO activity. There is a blending of skills, passion, creativity, and pure joy in creating a LEGO game, particularly one like Horizon, where an effort is made to transfer something extremely serious from the Horizon world to LEGO Horizon Adventures. We needed to give it that aspect of humorous, of light-hearted, of ridiculous, of play”.
” Horizon is all about the secret of the causes, specifically for Aloy. It’s something we tried to replicate in LEGO Horizon Adventures where every figure is on their quest for finding a community, building a home and making links with each other in the history of LEGO Horizon Adventures”, Guerrilla’s Design Director, Stephane Varrault, explains.
Whatever you come across in LEGO Horizon Adventures is made entirely out of genuine LEGO bricks, but if you have the right items at home, you could recover anything from the universe, including the machines, the gold chests, and Mother’s Center!
Guerrilla’s Senior World Artist, Lucas Bolt explained,” The world of Horizon Zero Dawn is filled with incredible natural surroundings, it’s one of the main pillars of the sport so that’s something that we also had to make for LEGO Horizon Adventures”.
” You can see how everything is made, all the little details, all the little LEGO parts that were used to bring items to life”, Joe Kyde, Senior Model Designer at The LEGO Group, adds.
The process of creating the Horizon planet in LEGO form was described in detail by Roy Postma, Art Director at Guerrilla.” We started out pretty realistically by rebuilding the original Old World structures from the Horizon activities. The Old World’s role as our LEGO world utterly made sense.
Watching the builds only develop is what I find my favorite aspect of the device design process. Groups working together to discover how to solve particular problems, how to achieve the activity we want, and how to achieve the specific seem we want.
” Throughout growth, we started by imagining what a LEGO version of each machine may actually seem like”, says Studio Gobo’s Game Design Lead, Toño Gonzalaz, with Stephane adding,” For every machine, we looked at the characteristics of the system, how it would act in the game, and how can we make it work best with all the LEGO masonry”?
The Shell-Walker, a crab-like vessel that transports cargo to various cauldrons found all over the world, is one of the machines in LEGO Horizon Adventures. ” With the Shell-Walker it really came down to its personality”, says Toño. ” It’s always trying to defend its cargo, so at the end of the day, the Shell-Walker feels like a mean, defensive machine, but at the same time in a funny way”.
According to The LEGO Group’s Creative Lead, Frédéric Andre,” we wanted to recreate the machine as detailed as possible, so you start with the skeleton of the machine and then you add all the details into it.” Guerrilla created the originals with LEGO bricks, but this one differed a lot from how they were created. Guerrilla adds all the armor plating and components to that same structure after adding the skeleton to the rest of their machines.
” All machines have their own distinctive, distinctive personalities and attacks,” according to the statement. They’re very different from one another, so when players are fighting combinations of them it creates really interesting, wacky, fun and creative combat”, Toño smiles.
Players can choose outfits from Aloy’s first LEGO adventure, as well as from existing LEGO sets that they may already own, in a fun and charming way thanks to the customization.
According to Stephane, “player freedom is one of our main pillars in the game. That’s why we created systems where no combat is the same, and why we wanted to offer really flexible ways to customize your characters and the world. For example, we really wanted Mother’s Heart to be a reflection of players ‘ creativity to recreate the village of their dreams”.
Kat shares her thoughts on how certain outfits in LEGO Horizon Adventures can completely alter a character conversation or cutscene. If you’re dressed as a pig or llama, it just makes what can occasionally be quite serious conversations ridiculous.
The customization options still sounded like a quintessential Horizon experience and worked within the game world as soon as we realized how much more free and enjoyable it was.
It was crucial that the LEGO Horizon Adventures co-op experience allowed players to use their actions as a resource and collaborate to conquer the wilds.
” We wanted players to play together and to get in trouble together”, shares Toño, and Stephane continues, “being able to get together, either on the same tv or online, you are now two players, two actors in the same world and that one is responding to your inputs and your actions, so it was the perfect addition to make the experience shine”.
Whether you’re already familiar with Aloy’s journey, or if this is the first time you’re jumping into the franchise, we ca n’t wait for everyone’s fun character combinations and combat sequences once LEGO Horizon Adventures releases on November 14.
