Last year, Huawei officially launched their first take on a folding smartphone, the Huawei Mate X. While it is an impressive smartphone in its own right, it didn’t have 5G since it wasn’t native in its chipset. This year, the X series is integrating the 5G capabilities of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G with the Huawei Mate Xs.
As part of the X series, the Huawei Mate Xs comes with an 8-inch OLED foldable inner display with a total resolution of 2480 x 220. Once folded, the singular main display turns into two screens: a 6.6-inch 2480 x 1148 main display and a 6.4-inch 2480 x 892 secondary display.
In order to make the hinge of the Xs more resilient, Huawei’s engineers employs a 2-layer structure and is now made up of around 100 components for a smoother operation. An optically clear adhesive is also used in-between the two polyamide films for an overall tougher build.
Huawei’s flagships always have their flagship smartphones at the forefront of smartphone photography technology thanks to their partnership with Leica and that doesn’t change with the Huawei Mate Xs. As a foldable smartphone, the device only comes with only a single set of cameras: a 40MP f/1.8 SuperSensing Main, an 8MP f/2.4 Telephoto with 2x Zoom, 16MP f/2.2 Ultrawide and a 3D Depth Sensor.
Inside its folding shell is a Kirin 990 5G chip that provides both the power and its 5G capabilities. The chip is accompanied by 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage.
Thanks to the new chip, the device also supports Dual-Band WiFi 802.11ax (WiFi 6) as well as Bluetooth 5.1. With its integration of 5G connectivity, the smartphone is able to deliver blazing fast transfer speeds in all spectrum of data transfer.
We expected the Huawei Mate Xs to come with their brand new environment for smartphones. Huawei, however, is still sticking to an Android 10 OS with their trademark EMUI 10 skin. We expect that the Google Play Store won’t be present on its release as the brand is putting their App Gallery at the forefront of the product’s official page.
The Huawei Mate Xs is powered by two 2,250mAh batteries for a total of 4,500 battery capacity. The battery can be charged via a USB Type-C port and supports 55W Fast Charging.
