Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40+ officially launched

The Huawei P40 series has been officially unveiled via an online global launch live stream. Composed of the P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+, Huawei’s latest flagship series is upping the game in terms of camera imaging as previous entries in the P series.

    Huawei P40 Pro.

The Huawei P40 series comes in three versions: the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+. The Huawei P40 comes with a triple camera setup with a 50MP f/1.9 RYYB main, a 16MP f/2.2 ultrawide, and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto with OIS.

Meanwhile, the Huawei P40 Pro upgrades the ultrawide lens to a 40MP f/1.8 cine lens. The telephoto capabilities has also been increased from the P40 to a 12MP f/3.4 RRYB periscope 5x optical telephoto lens.

    Huawei P40 Pro+.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ is the most impressive of the lot. Aside from having the 50MP f/1.9 RYYB main camera and the 40MP f/1.8 ultrawide cine lens, its zoom potential has been greatly expanded by two telephoto cameras: an 8MP f/2.4 3x optical telephoto lens and an 8MP f/4.4 periscope 10x optical telephoto shooter.

The Huawei P40 series main camera is powered by the Huawei Ultra Vision Sensor. The brand says that aside from having an RYYB design, it can take in up to 40% more light. This allows for an expanded ISO range that reaches ISO 204,800 in the Huawei P40 and ISO 409,600 in both the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+.

Huawei is also pushing the video capabilities of the P40 series. Both the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ comes with Directional Audio Zoom, support for 4K HDR+ content, and the ability to capture 4K60fps video.

Max ISO for video for the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ is rated at ISO 51,200 thanks to their 1/1.54-inch sensor on their 40MP f/1.9 ultrawide cine lens. Both devices can also take 7680fps ultra slow motion and support Dual OIS + AIS for stable video recording.

The display has received additional attention in the latest iteration of the Huawei P40 series. While the Huawei P40 has a traditional 6.1-inch 2340 x 1080 OLED screen, the P40 and P40+ come with a 6.58-inch Flex OLED display with a resolution of 2640 x 1080.

The display on the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ now curved at the edges to eliminate more of the unused bezels at the edges. Huawei says that the bezels have been minimized to just 1.71mm on their latest smartphones. These display support DCI-P3 coverage as well as HDR. The refresh rate has been increased as well for P40 Pro series from 60Hz to 90Hz, which will deliver a smoother experience especially in gaming.

All three smartphones come with a pill-style hole near the top-right side instead of a notch found on the P30 series. The camera responsible for taking selfies is a 32MP f/2.2 AF lens backed by an ambient and proximity sensor, and an IR Depth/Gesture camera. The new front cameras allows for Face Unlock, Smart Gesture Control, and AI Private View.

The Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+ are powered by the brand’s Kirin 990 5G chip, which is the same chipset powering the Huawei Mate Xs and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G. As the name suggests, this will allow these smartphones to support 5G connection.

The Huawei P40 series still ships with Android 10 with EMUI 10.1. Despite using Google’s OS, they don’t have Google services and instead are using Huawei Mobile Services. Apps can be downloaded and installed via the AppGallery.

Battery capacities differ from the Huawei P40 from the P40 Pro and Pro+. The Huawei P40 comes with a 3,800mAh battery supported by 22.5W Huawei SuperCharge. Meanwhile, both the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro+ has 4,200mAh battery reserves charged via a 40W Huawei SuperCharge connection.

Only the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ support wireless charging natively. The former has last generation’s 27W Wireless SuperCharge while the latter has a more powerful 40W Wireless Huawei SuperCharge.
