Huawei unveils Kirin 970, focuses on AI with neural processing unit | Hungry Geeks | Latest news

It’s no secret that Huawei’s Mate 10 is just on the horizon. The Chinese company, however, focused more on its upcoming Kirin 970 SoC rather than their upcoming smartphone. What separates the Kirin 970 from the high-end Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 is that it comes with its own “Neural Processing Unit.”

Based on a report, the Kirin 970 is built on a 10nm manufacturing process with 5.5 billion transistors. It features an octa-core CPU and a 12-core GPU. Huawei claims that its new SoC can deliver up to 25x more performance with 50x efficiency compared to a quad-core Cortex-A73 CPU.

The Kirin 970 is the first SoC that will bring more powerful AI features to handheld devices with the ultimate goal being a better user experience. No information yet as to when the Kirin 970 will be deployed to smartphones.
