The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is finally here. Doctor Strange is what you may call the “best of both worlds” as it feels both similar yet so different from what Marvel has given us in the movie theaters. Of course, it’s another superhero origin story, but they made it different by making the scenes trippier and in a more psychedelic place than any comic movie there is.

Doctor Strange is a breath of fresh air. You may have noticed that these previous Marvel movies are similar to each other, but with magic being first introduced to movie theaters, it’s the good kind of weird.

A whole new story

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Doctor Strange – an intelligent yet stubborn surgeon. After he gets in a car accident, he injures his hands thus putting an end to his career. He put all his efforts and money to repair his body but ends up giving up. With no scientific and medical procedure able to cure him, he then turns to other ways and made his way to a place called Kamar-Taj, where he is led to believe he will be able to cure his hands through spiritual ways.

But instead of finding someone who can actually heal his arms, Strange meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), also known as the “Sorcerer Supreme,” who trains sorcerers like Mordo (Chiwerel Ejiofor) and Wong (Benedict Wong) – shows Strange trippy things that quickly overcomes his doubts, and trains him to become her newest sorcerer.

The perfect combo of actors and visuals

After so many comic book movies, it’s not so difficult to see how Doctor Strange came to be. The usual arrogant and stubborn guy who is brought down after a near-death experience and then turns to become a true hero is almost perfectly identical to the story of Iron Man many years ago.

That said, what really makes Doctor Strange such an entertaining movie are the actors and the visuals. There’s an incredible cast and there are moments with these actors that will definitely make you smile and laugh. Mysteries surrounding the Ancient one feels like home when it is played by Swinton. Ejiofor brings his usual noble and humble aura to a character building up for the sequel and Cumberbatch is really perfect as Doctor Strange for both his acting as a know-it-all and being someone shocked to what he’s seeing.

The cinematography of Doctor Strange is awesome. The director did a great job of portraying the multiverse visuals. The graphics may also be compared to the movie Inception, but much more broad and colorful. There are so many surreal moments that stood outs, whether they involve folding buildings or something like the world from Ant-man.

That #OpenYourMind feeling

If you think about it this way, this is a story of a man who is so brilliant that he’s convinced that he knows everything there is to know about the world. He thinks he’s the smartest man in the room his entire life. So if you break through that and discover that there’s so much more to life than you’ve ever imagined, it’s like it’s metaphorically reflected with travelling through these different worlds and universes. The movie really tells you that there’s always a brand new door for new possibilities.

#DoctorStrangePH really did a great job of introducing a whole-new world without taking you out of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. And we thank Disney for inviting us to watch the advance screening.
