Samsung Galaxy S6 & Edge : A whole new Galaxy – Hungry Geeks

Here we go again! MWC 2015 takes place today and Samsung just announced the new Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge. Not to be beaten from Apple with the weak performance of the Galaxy S4 & S5, Samsung reinvented themselves with the Galaxy S6 with hopes to regain lost market share. Let’s check out what makes the S6 stands out among the rest.

Samsung launched 2 smartphones today, which are the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Besides with a metal body, latest processor, best performance camera and Latest LTE connectivity. Bundled with built in Samsung Pay, Wireless Charging (With rapid feature) for convenience. While the S6 edge features a dual curved screen as compared to the regular S6.

Design

At 6.8mm, both devices have Glass on both front and back, and the side is protected by metal. While the S6 edge is the world’s first dual curved glass smartphone. This delivers a better viewing experience, grip and impressive details. Samsung also improved the metal sides used in the body to avoid bending (Hehehe iPhone 6). Though we have to mention that the camera is still protruding which can annoy some. You can choose in 5 colors which are Black, Gold, Green, White and Blue, interestingly that the green color is a new bold move.

Display

Both device are 5.1″ in screen size with Quad-HD (2560×1440) resolution. The display is still the Super AMOLED screen which is traditionally present in the Galaxy series. Samsung also upgraded the screen glass to Corning Gorilla Glass 4 (on both sides) which is pretty much welcomed.

Camera

Shooting images is improved with F1.9 appeture lens and real-time HDR. The rear camera is 16mp with OIS (Optical image stabilization), while the front is 5mp with a wide angle lens. This results to 60% more light in both photo and video, plus when taking videos you can continuously track objects for better shots. Resolution in taking videos is up to 4K as well, while the rear camera can capture up to 1080p resolution.

Performance

The Galaxy S6 phones will use an in-house 14nm | 64bit Octa-Core Exynos 7420 processor (Cortex-A57 cores ticking at 2.1GHz and four Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5GHz). Samsung also went straight to 3GB DDR4 RAM instead of DDR3 4GB rams which the Zenfone 2 or other latest flagship smartphones announced.

Battery

The S6 is equipped with rapid charging technology that can give 4 hours of juice in just 10 minutes of charge and also included is wireless charging technology. Battery capacity is 2,550mAh and 2,600mAh respectively, this is an unfortunate downgrade from the 2,800mAh battery from the S5. Also do take note that the battery is now built-in, so they are now probably using Li-Polymer batteries here.

Samsung Pay

Samsung highlighted that NFC is not widely accepted. The S6 uses MST technology that enables payment even with a magnetic card swiper, thus making it possible for current terminals to accept Samsung Pay. Samsung partnered with Mastercard, Visa, Chase, American Express and banks like Citi, US Bank to deliver Samsung pay rapidly (Will initially be available in US & Korea).

The Galaxy S6 and Edge will be initially available by April 10th (in 20 countries). Storage is available from 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. Price is not announced yet, but our wild guess will be Php32,990 for the S6 and Php39,990 for the S6 edge.
