Samsung Galaxy S6 Hands-On : Goodbye Plastic – Hungry Geeks

Finally a Galaxy smartphone that isn’t made out of plastic! The new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were introduced last month and will be soon be available in the Philippines. Our friends from Globe Platinum gave us the opportunity to have a more in-depth hands on experience with these new flagship phones in their Gen 3 store in SM North Edsa.

Both the S6 and S6 edge are made of Glass and Metal, forget your memories about the previous flagship phones as Samsung totally scrapped the plastic body in the equation. The phones definitely feels premium and nice to hold, the curved glass on both devices contours into your palm for a better grip. Despite the glass front and back body, it has an oleophobic coating that prevents fingerprints, easier to clean and a silky smooth touch feeling.

The display is now bumped to Quad-HD despite its size, this delivers a very crisp and clear photo experience combined with Samsung’s impressive SUPER Amoled displays.

The ports are now also revamped, Samsung gladly threw away the micro USB 3.0 slots in exchange of fast charging micro-USB ports. Audio speakers are now also located at the bottom as the back is now fully covered in glass. The bottom part might closely resemble the iPhone 6, but we pretty much welcome it to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Edge.

The Galaxy S6 Edge’s dual curved screen feels definitely different, it paved to a thinner area to grip on the sides which could make you to be more careful. Nevertheless, its really one phone you would like to hold over and over.

The heart-rate monitor is still on the S6 despite its low usage senario, but Samsung took advantage of it through being the shutter button in taking photos. You will now simply glide your finger into the hear-rate sensor to take a photo, which is pretty neat but could lead to accident photo taking as well. The camera features a 16mp camera with an impressive 1.9f aperture, this gives the S6 and S6 edge an industry leading performance in terms of low light performance.

The Galaxy S6 is only 132g at 6.7mm thin, while the Galaxy S6 edge is only 132g light and 7mm thin. We honestly feel impressed with its premium body materials, along with the thin and light profile it has. Including the Glass and metal body construction, its pretty much the best phone we have hold in a while.

While trying our the new phones, we experience the new Touchwiz UI where its much neat and simple. Samsung definitely threw away all excessive UI and made a more unified color coded experience for the new phones. Along with the Android Lollipop experience, we were able to use the phones with no signs of lag at all.

Both devices are available in Black Sappire, White Pearl and Gold Platinum. While the S6 has the exclusive Blue topaz color and the S6 Edge has Green Emerald Color.

That’s it for now! Just in case you would like to experince it for your own, Globe is having demo areas to customers at the following sites. Globe stores in Greenbelt, Glorietta, Shangri-la, SM Megamall,Rockwell, Trinoma, SM North EDSA, SM Mall of Asia, Robinson’s Galleria, Alabang Town Center, SM Dasmarinas, Ayala Center Cebu, and Abreeza Mall in Davao, Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro and SM Baguio.
