Viewsonic has always been about displays. Mere mention of their name evokes a monitor that’s a bit Spartan but has the necessary features to fulfill its role. To test if the aforementioned description fits it well, we were lent with a Viewsonic VA2465S, a 24-inch IPS paneled FHD display, for us to play and tinker with.
Looks
Sporting a typical black glossy design, the VS2465S is a monitor that’s best left within the confines of a room. It’s not eye-catchy and is basic as a whole. It offers two ports, a VGA and a DVI. It has a flat backside for VESA mounting. The monitor is also compatible with a Kensington lock.
If you don’t plan on mounting it on a wall, you can assemble the two-part stand for a slightly yielding foundation.
User Experience
Assembling the whole device is not a trial. It’s simply just smacking the different parts altogether and you’re good to go. What’s strange with the VA2465S is the absence of an HDMI port. Yes, some monitors still do that, but for a 24-inch one? Why not? It might not have an audio port but HDMI is the far and wide accepted standards of devices nowadays, they be as technical as video cards, or as simple as Blu-ray Players or gaming consoles. The absence of the HDMI port reduces the number of compatible devices.
The buttons beneath the monitor offer a pleasant feedback when pressed. This is in stark comparison with other competing monitors and their subjective sensitivities. Controlling and adjusting the display is as simple and straightforward as it gets and does not trouble the user with highfaluting terms or twiddling fingers.
As far as display gets, you can expect bright pictures that get skewed thanks to the blue light filter. For the uninitiated, blue light radiates from an LCD display and it affects the user with various cases of discomfort. Viewsonic, together with various display makers, use blue light to eliminate or at least mitigate the effects. You can turn the blue light filter off if you wish to view a more accurate image.
Lastly, a minor setback is that the monitor has only a VGA cable bundled together with it. So if you don’t have a handy DVI cable at hand, then prepare to enjoy less than stellar resolutions.
Conclusion
Should you buy it? Well, it’s hard to recommend it given that the price tag warrants thinking twice since other brands are also offering a more convenient alternative. However, as far as display performance is concerned, the Viewsonic VA2465S is definitely part of the choice. The VESA mount and Kensington compatibility make it a good monitor in small offices. But for a household application, prepare to have it locked to a limited number of appliances (and have a DVI cable at the ready).
While we would’ve wanted to check on Viewsonic’s claim that the monitor is a real saver when it comes to electricity, the tardiness of a certain tool prevented us from doing just that.
