Later this year, YouTube is launching their paid service for users who don’t want to see ads in their videos. It’s a really good news for those annoying ads, but also bad news for those advertisers.
Currently, the company is sending out an email to their partners giving the news about the impending launch of their new subscription.
According to Bloomberg, the subscription will cost around $10 a month to rid the whole website of advertising, but those advertisers on YouTube have no choice but to accept these terms. If you don’t agree with these terms, all your videos will be set to private. Here’s the explanation:
YouTube will pay you 55% of the total net revenues recognized by YouTube from subscription fees that are attributable to the monthly views or watchtime of your Content as a percentage of the monthly views or watchtime of all or a subset of participating content in the relevant subscription offering
So basically, if someone pays for a subscription and watches your video, you’ll get a percentage of that fee paid to you as decided by YouTube, just like with advertising. It is not clear if that will be a smaller amount of money or not at this stage.
The new subscription service will be packed alongside YouTube’s paid music service, YouTube Music Key, as an added offer.
Currently, YouTube is not yet giving away a release date for their launch – the terms will take effect sometime in June, so we may expect it around then.
Personally, I don’t think I’m willing to pay for that price just to remove banner ads. Paying $10 a month just to remove advertisements seems like a big task, unless there are other features that comes with that said subscription.
